Personalized Rate of Return (PRR)

Click on a subject below for more information about PRR.

What is the PRR?

The Personalized Rate of Return (PRR) represents the performance of your retirement savings over a selected period of time. The performance of both guaranteed and market-related funds is included in this measure. While the PRR is calculated for each of your accounts and plans, the Consolidated PRR indicates the performance of your total holdings.

When may you request your PRR?

You may request your PRR 90 days following the date of the first contribution made in your name under a Manulife Group Retirement Plan.

topEvaluation Period

You may select a Variable Period of at least 90 days, by indicating the Beginning and End dates, or a Fixed Period of either 12 months, 2 years, 3 years or since Inception. The Inception Date corresponds to your Earliest Date.

  • Variable Period: Under this option, your PRR is calculated over the period you select. You may choose any period between your Earliest and Latest Date (i.e. yesterday's date) as long as the resulting period is at least 90 days.

Please note that the Beginning Date is exclusive while the End Date is inclusive. For example, should you want your PRR for 1997 you must enter "Beginning: 1996/12/31, End: 1997/12/31".

  • Fixed Period: Should you want your PRR to be calculated over the last 12 months, 2 years, 3 years or since Inception (Earliest Date), select the corresponding period in the pull-down menu.

For example, if you select "For the last 2 years", the Evaluation Period will cover the last 24 months from yesterday's date.

Minimum Evaluation Period

The Minimum Evaluation Period is 90 days. An evaluation period shorter than 90 days would not provide an accurate measure of performance as the value of market-related investments may fluctuate significantly over the short-term. A long-term outlook is recommended as a longer evaluation period will enable you to better forecast your investment performance.

topEarliest Date or Inception Date

The Earliest Date, also referred to as Inception Date, corresponds to the date when the first contribution was made in your name. However, if you were a member of a Manulife Group Retirement Plan prior to that date, your Earliest Date is the date when your assets were transferred to our new administration system.

PRR Calculation Method

The method used to calculate your PRR is based on the industry standard. This method of approximation of rate of return uses a formula time-weighted to your cashflow. This means that the timing of your contributions and withdrawals will impact your PRR Results. For example, if a contribution has only been invested for 10 days over the entire period, the calculation method will take this information into account. However, in instances where there is substantial cashflow in and out of your account or a relatively high degree of volatility in your account, your PRR Results may be skewed.

PRR Results

This page indicates your different PRRs. Rates of returns for periods of more than one year have been annualized.

It shows your consolidated PRR, which is the performance of all your assets over the period selected.

The performance of each plan and account will also be indicated. The Evaluation Period of a specific plan or account may be different than the one selected, for the following reasons:

  1. The date of the first deposit is after the Beginning of the Evaluation Period selected.
  2. All investments were withdrawn prior to the End of the Evaluation Period selected.

In both cases the revised date will be indicated with a short explanation.

Your PRR Results will be maintained for a maximum period of 7 days or until a new request is submitted.

Annualized Rate of Return

The annualized rate of return represents an average of the annual rate of return of an investment over a specific number of consecutive periods. It allows you to more accurately forecast the long-term trend of performance by dampening the effect of short term fluctuations.
